When it comes to investing in home improvements, adding insulation to your attic is one of the smartest choices you can make. Many homes don’t have proper attic insulation, and some may not have any at all. As a result, the house is not very energy efficient.
Heat rises, which means that the heat your HVAC system produces will rise to the top of your home during the winter. If your attic isn’t properly insulated, the heat will escape through the roof and out of your home. Insulation also helps keep cold air inside and prevents the heat from coming into your home during the summers.
Not only will proper attic insulation improve your home comfort levels, but it will also reduce the amount of energy you’re losing. Consider that the heating and cooling costs of the average Canadian home account for roughly 50 to 70 percent of their total energy usage. By reducing the amount of energy you are using and losing, you’ll save money on your energy costs.
The Additional Benefits of Insulating Your Attic
Saving money on your energy bills and improving home comfort are the two primary benefits of attic insulation, but they’re not the only ones. Attic insulation will also reduce the wear and tear of your HVAC system. Because your HVAC system won’t have to work as hard or as much to replace lost heat or cool air, it is less likely to need repairs. This will help extend its lifespan and save you from replacing it sooner than necessary.
By preventing heat from escaping into the attic, where it can cause snow on your roof to melt, you will also save your roof. Constant melting and freezing can damage your roof, so adding insulation to prevent heat loss will ensure your roof does not have to face such damaging factors. This can also reduce the risk of mould growth.
Types Of Insulation We Provide
Our team uses two main types of insulation in attics: cellulose and spray foam. The following is a brief breakdown of both types:
Cellulose Insulation
Also called blown-in or loose-fill insulation. It is ideal for plugging and filling gaps and small spaces for better coverage.
Consists of more recycled materials than any other type of insulation.
Its flame retardant, which helps to reduce fire hazards and improves the safety of your home.
Treated with boric acid to repel insects and mould.
Won’t affect the health of anyone in your household in a negative way.
Fibreglass Insulation
Available as a loose material that can be blown into attics.
Blankets or batts can be used in wall cavities and on flat surfaces.
Made of plastic filaments and recycled glass.
Resists moisture, reducing the likelihood of mould growth.
Naturally sound absorbent, reducing the sound coming in or out of your home.
Spray Foam Insulation
Boasts the highest R-value, which means it’s the most effective form of insulation on the market.
Absorbs sound, thereby contributing further to your home comfort.
Improves the strength of your walls.
Acts like a vapour barrier and air barrier.
Helps prevent roof condensation.
How We Make Your Insulation More Effective
When insulating your attic, we do more than add material to the ceiling, walls, and floor. We also ensure that we properly insulate the various elements in your attic to remove potential air leaks, giving you a sealed, secure, and efficient home.
To do this, we insulate and seal your attic hatch. This is the doorway in your home that leads to your attic, often located in the second-floor hallway or a closet. Although it is usually forgotten during insulation, the attic hatch can be a significant source of air leaks and should be treated the same as any door in your home that leads outside.
Air leaks coming from your attic hatch allow the heated air in your home to escape in winter and the conditioned air to get out during the summer. This is not only uncomfortable, but also quite expensive as your HVAC system works to replace the air that was lost.
In addition to the hatch, we take care to insulate around any light fixtures and ventilation pipes. This helps to seal any gaps that may exist, helping to further reduce the chance of air leaks. When we are finished, your home will be more comfortable, more efficient, and save you money.
