An energy audit, also called an energy evaluation, is when an auditor performs a thorough inspection of your home to determine its energy efficiency. They will also identify opportunities and upgrades that will help improve your score.

What Does an Energy Audit Involve?
The following is a step-by-step breakdown of what to expect when scheduling an energy audit:
- Preparing for the audit – The auditor will ask you a series of questions to find out if your home is habitable, to make sure it’s not under renovations, that it’s accessible, and that all openings are sealed.
- The audit – The audit should take around three hours. The auditor will use a blower door test and infrared scanning to identify any air leaks. They will also evaluate the efficiency of your insulation and HVAC system, among other things.
- The results – You’ll be provided with a full report that compares your home’s efficiency with that of other houses. It will also include recommendations to improve your energy efficiency in various ways.
- The follow-up – If you follow the advice provided in your report, you can request a follow-up afterward to see how your results have improved and ensure you qualify for all applicable rebates.
